UKCMC Endorsed Courses
The club supports the development of its member’s ability in Mountaineering activities so that they in turn are capable of guiding others in the club. We traditionally recommend two courses for lead climbing as this is an advance skill that is hard to teach in the club. The club is allocated money to subsidise people doing these courses and we currently pay for half of the cost. Below is information on both of the courses:
Beyond the Edge – Introduction to Lead Climbing http://www.beyondtheedge.co.uk/Rock%20Climbing.htm
Description: This course is for people with some experience of rock climbing, who want to learn to lead climb on natural rock, outside. It is aimed at people who have climbing wall experience (possibly leading inside), as well as people who have done a little previous climbing and therefore know some of the basics. You will learn how to set up belays, use runners, and lead climbs, whilst understanding all the potential dangers involved. Clients will be encouraged to go at their own pace and climb routes within their ability whilst improving their skills in a supportive environment. This course teaches the foundation of what you need to know to competently lead climbing. Cost: £65 (£130 without club grant) Location: Peak District
Plas y Brenin – Introduction to Lead Climbing http://www.pyb.co.uk/courses/rock-climbing.php
Description: This two day course is ideal for anyone with seconding experience and wanting to lead their first climb. Covering everything from selection of protection and rope work to understanding guidebooks and choosing routes, you should leave with a confident understanding of lead climbing. This course is considered the most informative by many old gits and is run by a very established company. You should consider the extra cost and distance as it is worth while. Cost: £140 (£280 without club grant) Location: North Wales
The distribution of grants depends on several factors that includes, but goes beyond, the number of applicants, commitment to the club, a desire to learn and teach others, and preparation for the course. No one has a right to a grant and what Helen (as Training and Safety Officer) and I decide is final. If you would like to do one of these courses email Ray (prt7@kent.ac.uk) with what course you want to do and research what date you would like to do it. I don’t want to set a deadline but please contact me ASAP so that your request can be considered. If there are other courses that you would like to do and would be beneficial to the club by all means supply what information you have and it will be considered.
