UKC Mountaineering Club

Weekends Away

We go on weekends away usually twice a term to places such as Snowdonia, The Peak District and The Lake District. These are excellent opportunities to do some great walking and climbing in some of the most beautiful parts of Britain, and makes a change from the routine of university and Canterbury.

A map of where we've been can be found on the pictures page.

About half of the people who go on trips will do some walking rather than climbing (especially if the weather is not so good) so the trips are not just for the die hard climbers in the club.

The trips cost about 20 - 30 pounds and include transport and accommodation which usually take the form of a minibus and a hut (no camping!). All you need is a sleeping bag and a waterproof jacket! Here's a little list of things which are generally a good idea to bring anyway:

  • Outdoor clothes -- lightweight trousers are preferred (e.g. tracksuit bottoms), jeans become very heavy when wet; warm wooly jumper advisable. Also footwear (walking boots or trainers).
  • Evening clothes -- for the pub, etc. (particularly if it rains during the day)
  • Sleeping bag (the club can usually provide one or two spare, but ensure you arrange this in advance!). Include a bin-bag (or couple) to wrap the sleeping back -- it'll ride on the top of the bus.
  • Breakfast/lunch fodder, and something for the Friday night (we often stop at services/truck-stops on the way, where food can be obtained). The evening meals are ad-hoc or provided by the local pub/chippy. The usual Saturday night involves en-masse food, which you don't need to worry about.
  • Small first-aid kit (if you have one) -- the club will bring their own, but better safe than sorry.
  • A towel -- because a good traveller is never without their towel ;). And any other bathroom artifacts you might want to bring along.
  • Climbing stuff, if you own it (or if the club owns it!): rock shoes, harness, helmet, rack, bivy-bag, thermo-rest, tent.
  • Headtorch or regular torch.

Bear in mind that this is the UK -- our weather can be very unpredictable. If it's bright and sunny in the morning before setting off on a walk, it'll probably be raining hard by lunchtime..! In the winter-ish months (i.e. October - April) warm stuff is strongly advised (gloves, woolly-hat, fleece, etc.).
